Martin County Beaches Remain Open After Shark Attack, Memorial Planned for Slain Surfer

The Stuart News reported on February 4, 2010:

"Martin County Fire Rescue officials confirmed Thursday morning that the county's beaches would remain open, despite the death of a kiteboard surfer on Wednesday.

"The beaches are open and lifeguards are on duty as usual," said Doug Killane, bureau chief of fire prevention with Martin County Fire Rescue and public information officer.

Killane said top fire rescue officials discussed the matter late Wednesday and again Thursday morning and decided that the rarity of shark attacks did not warrant closing the beaches. Still, he suggested that swimmers be especially aware of their surroundings in the water.

Friends of Stephen Howard Schafer have scheduled a memorial service for Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Stuart Beach."
