The Sowetan was founded on February 2, 1981 as a liberation struggle newspaper that was freely distributed to households in the black township of Soweto, Johannesburg. Owned by Avusa (a South African media company formerly known as Johnnic Communications), the newspaper tends toward a left-wing editorial tone. Readership is estimated at 1.5 million, with a circulation of about 125,000 copies.
