TechCrunch was founded by Michael Arrington on June 11, 2005, as a web publication dedicated to profiling and reviewing new Internet products and companies. In addition to covering new companies, the web site profiles existing companies that are making an impact (commercial and/or cultural) on the new web space. In March 2010, TechCrunch announced it would be launching TechCrunch TV.

On February 27, 2012 Eric Eldon replaced Erick Schonfeld as the editor of TechCrunch. In September 2011 founder-editor Michael Arrington stepped down as the editor of the web site.
