Named after the popular music file format MP3 (a digital audio encoding format), MP3.com is owned by CBS Corporation, which describes the site as "the original online source for free legal music downloads." MP3.com was originally launched in 1997 as a place for downloading and sharing music. The website has had a number of owners and incarnations over the years. In 2008, CBS acquired the site with its purchase of CNET Networks. The website includes the "free MP3 of the day," a complimentary track from a high-profile artist, along with posts about the music scene and headlines from CBS radio stations.
