Kirkus Reviews Editor Says There's A Buyer In The Works

Daily Finance reported on January 5, 2010:

"Managing editor Eric Liebetrau hasn't yet returned a request for comment, but the internal memo appears below.

From: Liebetrau, Eric
Date: Tue, Jan 5, 2010
Subject: Kirkus revival!

Hello everyone-

I have some great news to report! Effective immediately, we are restarting publication of Kirkus Reviews. There is a buyer in the works (that's all we know right now), and until the deal closes - probably 2-3 weeks - we will resume business as usual under the Nielsen umbrella.

There are no more details to report at the moment, other than status quo for all contributors."

Reaction Mixed To Shutdown Of Kirkus Reviews, the New York Observer reported on December 10, 2009:

"Kirkus reviewers were a famously grouchy lot who did not give compliments easily, but when they smiled upon something it did not go unnoticed.

"I'm sorry if some people have lost their jobs. I want to make that part very clear," said ICM co-head Esther Newberg. "But it's never been a publication worth anything. The reviews were almost always negative and not helpful in any way. And so that's it. Good riddance."

"What can I think? It's bad. It's a real blow," said the literary agent Susan Golomb. "It's just one more review outlet that won't exist. I think every agent and writer and editor would say they have mixed feelings about Kirkus, but they can be helpful when you can't get any other coverage. When you get a good review in Kirkus, at least you have something that you can put on the cover."
