Conde Nast Ad-Page Numbers Continue Drop; Architectural Digest Hit Hardest

The New York Times reported on November 11, 2009

"The company’s ad pages at monthly magazines have declined by almost a third since last year, with the company losing 8,359 ad pages this year, according to estimates it released Wednesday. Condé Nast began cost-cutting this fall, closing Gourmet, Modern Bride, Elegant Bride and Cookie.

The worst-hit magazines for the year were Architectural Digest, where ad pages fell 49.9 percent; W, where ad pages fell 46 percent; and Condé Nast Traveler, where pages fell 41.1 percent. Details and Wired both fell about 39 percent."

Architectural Digest editor-in-chief Paige Rense may be on her way out, Keith Kelly wrote in the New York Post on August 14, 2009:

"Rumblings are growing louder inside and outside Condé Nast's 4 Times Square headquarters that Paige Rense, the imperious and longtime editor-in-chief of Architectural Digest, will be gone before year's end, and that a search for her successor has quietly begun.

If true, it may come as a surprise to Rense."

Jeffrey Nemeroff, the art director at Architectural Digest, has left the magazine. WWD (another Conde Nast publication) reported that he had butted heads with the magazine’s "famously tough-talking editor in chief," Paige Rense.

A spokeswoman for Architectural Digest said Nemeroff's deputy, George Moscahldes, has been named the new art director.

Architectural Digest will not survive through the end of next year, in the opinion of Douglas A. McIntyre at 24/7 Wall Street from the article "Twelve Major Brands That Will Disappear" published on April 15, 2009:

"Architectural Digest Magazine has lost 47% of its ad pages this year. The magazine is owned by Conde Nast which is controlled by the Newhouse family. Newhouse is having significant financial problems with both its newspaper operations, which used to be very profitable, and its magazine group. Architectural Digest is operating in an environment where high-end home sales and expensive redecorating have been driven out of the market. It is also up against a number of other home and shelter magazines. Publications which are losing nearly half of their ad pages are almost certainly not going to make it for another year no matter what subjects they cover. Conde Nast has already closed or cut back several of its magazines."
