Current TV Cuts 80 Jobs, Announces Major Shift in Programming Strategy

The San Francisco Chronicle reported on November 11, 2009:

"The San Francisco cable and Internet video channel co-founded by former Vice President Al Gore is moving away from daily in-house production of short-form programs and toward programs presented in more industry-standard 30- and 60-minute formats.

The cutbacks come even as Current Media expects its most profitable year.

"This is less about an exercise in cost-cutting and more about a strategic realignment of our programming," Chief Operating Officer Joanna Drake Earl said in an interview."

Current Media, the owner of Current TV, has named a new CEO, the company announced on July 17, 2009. From the press release:

"Current Media, the award-winning participatory multiplatform media company, has selected cable industry veteran Mark Rosenthal as the company's new CEO, it was announced today by company co-founders Al Gore and Joel Hyatt. Rosenthal, former CEO of Interpublic Media and President and COO of MTV Networks, will be charged with the ongoing domestic and international expansion efforts of the company.

The announcement comes on the heels of four years of explosive growth for Current Media under the direction of former CEO and newly named Vice Chairman Joel Hyatt. The youngest television network ever to win an Emmy Award(R), Current TV recently passed the 60 million cable and satellite television household mark in April, and the successful launch and explosive growth of Current.com enjoys over 7 million unique visitors each month. Current's hit investigative journalism show Vanguard was nominated this week for its third Emmy Award(R) for Best News & Documentary program.

"Mark Rosenthal has been a vital and valued member of the Current Board since its inception," said Al Gore, Chairman and co-founder of Current Media. "Joel and I are thrilled to have him join our senior team to accelerate Current's growth and success. His experience building some of the world's most successful cable television networks, advertising and new media companies is the perfect addition to our team as we open new opportunities for Current's domestic and international expansion."

"Al and I look forward to working with Mark Rosenthal in his new capacity as CEO," said Joel Hyatt, co-founder and newly named Vice Chairman of Current Media. "Mark shares our passion for reinventing journalism, which Al and I are committed to doing at Current. While Mark focuses on building the business, Al and I will continue to work on new innovations and initiatives that serve to democratize the media and enable more voices to be heard."

Two Current TV reporters face jail in North Korea, the Times of London reported on April 18, 2009:

"In a state “guest house” on the outskirts of Pyongyang, Laura Ling and Euna Lee have been held for more than a month: valuable pawns in an growing international nuclear stand-off.

Hanging over the heads of the American journalists is the possibility of a show trial and ten years in a notoriously harsh North Korean prison camp. The outside world knows little about how they are holding up — because North Korea is not saying and the United States, while trying to free them through diplomacy, has tried to impose a blanket of silence.

The signs, though, are not good for the employees of Current TV, a web-based television channel founded by Al Gore, the former US Vice-President, because their future appears bound up in the widening rift between Pyongyang and much of the rest of the world over its recent missile launch. The reclusive regime of Kim Jong Il has halted all talks and expelled international experts monitoring its nuclear activities after the United Nations condemned its decision to fire a rocket over Japan."

No IPO for Current TV: On April 11, 2009, the San Francisco Chronicle reported the story:

"Current Media, the San Francisco cable television company co-founded by former Vice President Al Gore, canceled plans for an initial public offering on Friday, citing the bad economy.

The withdrawal comes 14 months after Current, the parent of Current TV, filed for a $100 million IPO that would have funded the company's expansion and opened the door to a potential windfall for Gore and his partner, CEO Joel Hyatt."
