Great White Shark Sighting Prompts News Conference
-- The New Bedford Standard-Times reported on June 29, 2010:
"Public interest in great white sharks is so intense that it only took a fisherman catching a 6-foot, 125-pound juvenile off Stellwagen Bank on Saturday for state officials to call a press conference to reassure everyone local waters are safe.
Ostensibly, Monday's press conference at the New England Aquarium was to allow experts to give an update on their great white research. The message of the day, however, seemed to be this: It will be safe to go in the water this summer.
Ian Bowles, the state Secretary for Energy and Environmental Affairs, was careful to point out there hasn't been a confirmed attack on a person in Massachusetts for more than 70 years, despite a relatively rapid build-up of seals, sharks' favorite food, over the past 20 years."
