Naples Man Arrested After Sending Device That Looked Like a Bomb to Naples Daily News

-- Naples Daily News editorial page editor Jeff Lytle thought he might have been sent a bomb. In fact, he had been sent a recording of the song "Call Me" by the band Blondie:

"A Naples man was arrested Friday afternoon after Collier County sheriff’s deputies say he sent a device that looked like a bomb to a Naples Daily News editorial page editor.

However, when triggered, the only thing blasting was a 1980 tune by the pop/rock band Blondie.

Garrett Beyrent, 61, of 506 Gordonia Road, was charged with manufacture/deliver of a hoax bomb. He also was charged with violating his probation on a DUI conviction.

According to a report:

Deputies were called to the North Naples fire station at 1441 Pine Ridge Road on Thursday evening to investigate a suspicious item.

Deputies learned that Naples Daily News Editorial Page Editor Jeff Lytle had received an envelope earlier in the day that contained a red binder of notes, articles and photographs.

Attached was Beyrent’s business card.

On one side of the business card there was a tab that said “pull here.” On the other side, a paper clip, wiring and electronics were glued to the card, giving it the appearance of an explosive device."
