Portland Oregonian Publisher Fred A. Stickel Retiring at Age 87

-- The long-time publisher of the Portland Oregonian is retiring at age 87, the newspaper reported on September 9, 2009:

"Fred A. Stickel, publisher of The Oregonian for 35 years, taking it from the hot-metal-type era to the digital age, will retire Sept. 18.

A World War II Marine Corps veteran, Stickel ran The Oregonian Publishing Co. -- the state's oldest continuously functioning business -- as the paper won five Pulitzer Prizes and many other awards.

The man with the pressed suit, a clipped New Jersey accent and a magnetic-red Corvette convertible, built the company into a star of regional newspapers, attracting advertisers while guarding independence of The Oregonian's news division. He departs as newspapers face unprecedented competition from the Internet and new forms of news delivery.

"I am 87 years old," Stickel said. "I love this newspaper and the essential role it plays in Oregon and this community. But it is time for me to retire and make way for new leadership."

Patrick F. Stickel, The Oregonian's president and a son of Fred Stickel, will serve as interim publisher. Patrick Stickel, 59, said he has chosen for personal reasons not to be a candidate for publisher.

The publisher is the chief executive officer of a newspaper. The job, Fred Stickel said, requires treating people with respect and realizing that "there's very little difference between journalists and academics," whose independent ways can be difficult for managers."
