HBO Rolls Out Pelosi's 'Citizen USA: A 50 State Road Trip'
-- Filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi, daughter of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, has crafted a documentary about the naturalization process, the procedure followed by foreign-born people who wish to become American citizens. HBO has begun announcing cities and dates for a promotional tour, with a stop in Memphis planned for June 23, 2011.
A planned naturalization ceremony on Comedy Central's 'The Colbert Show' was deep-sixed by the White House over concerns about treating the ceremony with appropriate seriousness.
In the film, Pelosi travels the U.S. to attend naturalization ceremonies across all 50 states, where she meets brand-new citizens to find out why they chose America as their home. Described as a feel-good birthday card to America, the film strives to illuminate what separates this country from the globe's other nations.
The documentary is also intended to hold the mirror up to American society, and to demonstrate how much most Americans take for granted: running water, electricity and the right to bear arms, hold hands in public and vote.
'Citizen USA' is set to debut on HBO on July 4.
