Texas Governor Rick Perry Announces Run for President

-- Perry, the Republican governor of Texas, announced that he will run for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination on August 13, 2011.

At his new campaign website, Perry describes himself as "a champion of conservative principles."

Perry was a member of the Democratic party until 1989. He served three terms as a Democrat in the Texas state legislature before switching parties in 1989 to run for Texas agricultural commissioner. He won that election in 1990 and was re-elected in 1994.

In 1998, Perry was elected lieutenant governor of Texas. He became the governor of Texas in December 2000 after Governor George W. Bush resigned his office to become President of the United States.

Perry has since won three terms as governor, beating Democrat Tony Sanchez in 2002, defeating a four-candidate field in 2006, and winning against Houston Mayor Bill White in 2010.

The Austin American-Statesman reported: "Perry is making a late entry into the presidential race, but he should vault immediately to the top of the Republican field. He is likely to out-raise most, if not all, of his GOP opponents. His campaign is already pursuing an aggressive fundraising schedule that, in its early days, will rely heavily on the Texas donors who have lavished Perry with campaign cash over the years."
