The Denver Post has made some changes to its operations, the Daily Camera reported on August 27, 2009:

"...the Denver Post and the Denver Newspaper Agency announced they formally ended the joint operating agreement created in 2001 that combined the business operations of the Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News. The Denver Post and the Denver Newspaper Agency will merge into one company and be managed by MediaNews, officials said.

The combined entity also completed a financing that puts the Denver Post “on a more solid foundation to prosper during these challenging economic times,” William Dean Singleton, chairman and publisher of the Denver Post, said in a statement."

Dean Singleton, the CEO of MediaNews Group, which owns the Denver Post, wrote a memo to employees on May 8, 2009 to signal that company newspapers will no longer "give all of our content away for free:"

"While our websites attract a significant audience and drive considerable page views, we face three daunting challenges that needed to be addressed. First, we continue to do an injustice to our print subscribers and create perceptions that our content has no value by putting all of our print content online for free. Not only does this erode our print circulation, it devalues the core of our business - the great local journalism we (and only we) produce on a daily basis. Second, our interactive revenue growth has slowed because it has been too closely tied to our print classified business, which has suffered with the advent of Craigslist and other free online classified opportunities. Finally, we are not significantly extending the reach of our audience, as our online products too closely resemble the newspaper, and thus fail to meaningfully reach the next generation of readers."

March 13, 2009: Virginia Lister the Research Manager of the Market Resources Department of the Denver Post reports the papers significant circulation number increase.

Since the Rocky Mountain News subscriptions were converted to Post subscribers on February 28, 2009 the following numbers reflect those additions.

Prior to the Rocky's fold the daily circulation average of the Post was about 220,000. The current daily circulation average is reported at 426,928.

This significant jump moves the Denver Post from being in the top 40 to the top 10 U.S. circulation newspapers. New circulation audit data will reveal if the Post can hold the collapsed Rocky's subscribers as their own.

On December 12, 2008, the Rocky Mountain News reported that the owner of the Denver Post wants to save some money:

"The Denver Post Publisher William Dean Singleton on Friday asked unions at The Post and Denver Newspaper Agency to reopen their labor contracts immediately, saying he needs to slash expenses by $20 million.

"We all know the financial situation is not good in the newspaper industry - he referenced that and requested we begin bargaining (next week)," said Tony Mulligan, a spokesman for Denver Newspaper Guild Local 37074.

"It's definitely concessionary bargaining," Mulligan added, meaning wage, benefit and job cuts would be sought.

Singleton's request comes a day after Moody's Investors Services said his MediaNews Group faces an increased risk of defaulting on its loans, and a week after E.W. Scripps announced it was putting the Rocky up for sale and seeking an exit to the DNA's Joint Operating Agreement. Moody's downgraded almost $1 billion of MediaNews debt."

There are rumours that the Rocky Mountain News is going to consolidate into the Post. Is there a decision?
