Aw, Marge! -- Playboy Reports $23.5 Million Loss; CEO Says "Bolder Steps Required" For Profitability.

Foliomag reported on November 5, 2009:

"CEO Scott Flanders declined to offer specifics about the “bolder” steps, but said three things are sure: he’s creating a new “corporate culture” that enables his staff to think and perform across divisions; he’s working on a joint venture in the development of a new business model for the company; and is strongly considering further cost cutting initiatives.

Flanders said he expects to announce those developments before the end of the year."

In October 2009, Playboy Enterprises announced that it will cut the rate base of Playboy magazine by 38 percent, from 2.6 million to 1.5 million copies. The change is effective with the January 2010 issue. The January and February 2010 issues will also be combined into one.

Playboy is planning to make some 'radical changes' to the magazine, Julie Johnsson of the Chicago Tribune reported on May 11, 2009:

"Reeling from declines in readership and advertising, Playboy magazine is contemplating "radical changes" that may include cutting its circulation and reducing the frequency with which it is published, Jerome Kern, interim chairman and chief executive of Playboy Enterprises Inc. told analysts Monday.

The troubled publisher has embarked on a series of cost cuts in recent months, including closing its New York offices on May 1. Christie Hefner departed as CEO in January, after two decades as leader of the Chicago-based media firm, and Playboy's board is in the process of finding her replacement.

Next up is a make-over of its flagship publication. Playboy plans to combine its July and August issues into a single edition to reduce printing and distribution costs, and it is looking at trimming its circulation and reducing its advertising rates, officials said."

Playboy has made a digital archive of past issues available online. The archive of more than 50 back issues is available at no cost, and with no age verification.

The company released this statement about the new service on March 18, 2009:

"Playboy Enterprises, Inc. (NYSE: PLA, PLAA) and Bondi Digital Publishing LLC, today went live with the public beta version of www.playboyarchive.com, a website where web viewers can instantly view a collection of digital back issues of Playboy Magazine from each of the years 1954 through 2007 without charge.

In a first for Playboy, readers and fans will be able to go online and instantly browse, search and read a compilation of perfect digital back issues of the magazine, many of which are highly sought-after collectors’ items. Each digital issue in the web archive will appear exactly as it did – including advertisements – in the original print edition of Playboy.

“Playboy has an incredibly rich history and an intensely loyal readership,” says Hugh M. Hefner, Playboy Founder, Editor-in-Chief and Chief Creative Officer. “This is the perfect opportunity to offer them something they have always wanted and also a great way to allow a whole new generation to easily explore the magazine.”

On December 12, 2008, Reuters reported that Playboy made a little booboo in Mexico:

"A nude model resembling the Virgin Mary on the cover of the Mexican edition of Playboy magazine, published only days before a major Mexican festival dedicated to the mother of Jesus, prompted the company's U.S. headquarters on Friday to apologize.

The magazine, which hit newsstands on Dec. 1 as ceremonies began leading to Friday's pilgrimage to the Mexico City shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe, showed a model wearing nothing but a white cloth over her head and breasts.

She is standing in front of a stained glass window with the cover line, "We Love You, Maria" in Spanish. The model's name is Maria Florencia Onori.

The Virgin of Guadalupe, said to have appeared to a sixteenth century Indian peasant, is Mexico's most revered Roman Catholic figure and the annual pilgrimage to the Mexico City basilica dedicated to her is one of the world's largest religious events.

In a statement, Chicago-based Playboy Enterprises Inc said the Mexican edition of the magazine is published by a licensee, and the company did not approve or endorse the cover.

"While Playboy Mexico never meant for the cover or images to offend anyone, we recognize that it has created offense, and we as well as Playboy Mexico offer our sincerest apologies," the statement said.

Raul Sayrols, publisher of Playboy Mexico, said in a statement, "The image is not and never was intended to portray the Virgin of Guadalupe or any other religious figure. The intent was to reflect a Renaissance-like mood on the cover."

Playboy Mexico printed 100,000 copies of the issue."
