Mondo Times editors Boulder Colorado USA | Posted at 10:04am on Monday, March 15th, 2010 | Discovery Communications Envied for Global Reach
The New York Times reported on March 14, 2010:
"Rupert Murdoch’s deputy, Chase Carey, looked out on the cable television landscape last fall and found a rival he wanted to emulate. Discovery Communications, he said, is “a road map of where I’d like to be.”
That is a big endorsement of Discovery, especially considering that it is just one-ninth the size of Mr. Murdoch’s company, the News Corporation. It is a testament to the fact that Discovery, the owner of 13 cable channels in the United States, has become a favorite on Wall Street, and its chief executive, David Zaslav, has become the subject of envy in the television industry.
These days, every media company seems to wish it were a cable TV company, drawing revenue from subscribers and advertisers. Within cable, analysts say Discovery is particularly well positioned because it owns most of its shows and it can cheaply replay those shows in dozens of countries. (Many others rely more heavily on independent producers, limiting their international potential.)"

AdAge reported on November 11, 2009:
When Hearst Corp. launched "O the Oprah Magazine" in 2000, the media conglomerate had to work its way through a nontraditional command structure that raised eyebrows and generated tension while the glossy book was still in startup mode.
So longtime media watchers may be less surprised than one might think by some of the growing pains taking place as Discovery Communications works with Ms. Winfrey and staff to launch OWN, also known as the Oprah Winfrey Network.
And while a celebrity can launch a magazine or a TV show, "no celebrity has ever branded a network," said Larry Novenstern, exec VP-director of national and local broadcast at Publicis Groupe's Optimedia.
"She's not going to be on 24/7," he added. What kind of performance will the entire programming lineup be able to put on "when she's not on?" he asked.
