On June 13, 2009, Donate Life Hollywood will honor three ABC-TV shows, "Brothers and Sisters," "Grey's Anatomy" and "Samantha Who?" with its first annual Inspire Award. This honor, from the organ and tissue donation and transplant community, will be presented at the culmination of the daylong Donate Life Film Festival at the Directors Guild of America.

Three of the five honored scripted television storylines that met the Donate Life Hollywood criteria were on ABC-TV. "Inspire" winners show the dramatic process of organ donation and transplantation in a way that is both accurate and inspiring, without perpetuating harmful myths.

Recent research by Dr. Susan Morgan, Purdue University, provides evidence that myths about organ donation, such as a black market for organs, prevent people from registering as donors. With over 100,000 people currently waiting for a life-saving organ and 18 people dying every day waiting because of a shortage of organs, these storylines could literally be costing lives.

Donate Life Hollywood is part of the national Donate Life movement and serves as a liaison between the organ and tissue community and the entertainment industry with the mission of seeing more accurate and inspiring organ donation storylines on television and in film.

Jimmy Kimmel spent Tuesday afternoon annoying TV network advertising buyers, rather than the general public, Dave Itzkoff of the New York Times reported on May 19, 2009:

"If Jimmy Kimmel still has a job at ABC on Wednesday, he is either a very lucky or very deft comedian, or he has great blackmail photos of the network executives.

At Tuesday afternoon’s upfront presentation in New York, Mr. Kimmel, the host of ABC’s late night talk show “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” delivered a withering, blistering monologue that took direct aim at ABC, its potential advertisers and his NBC late-night rival, Jay Leno. The assembled advertisers received his performance with a mixture of uneasy laughs and the occasional gasp.

Bouncing onto the stage at just after 4 p.m., Mr. Kimmel self-deprecatingly declared, “All of ABC’s late night comedy talent is assembled here on one stage.” After rattling off a few statistics about the affluence of his viewers, he then admitted that he’d made all the numbers up. (He said so in a more obscene way.)

Then, in a “Jerry Maguire”-like moment of clarity, Mr. Kimmel said, “Everything you’re going to hear this week is” nonsense. “Let’s get real here. Let’s get Dr. Phil-real here. These new fall shows? We’re going to cancel about 90 percent of them. Maybe more.”

ABC TV is going for "big names, big laughs, big events" in the upcoming fall television season, USA Today reported on May 19, 2009:

"ABC is banking on star-driven comedies and big-event dramas to bolster its lineup as its still-popular top dramas show signs of aging.

A schedule to be unveiled to advertisers today includes 10 new series — the most of any network — including sitcoms with Kelsey Grammer (as a laid-off exec in Hank), Courteney Cox (as a newly single mom with a teenage son in Cougar Town) and Patricia Heaton (as the matriarch of a Midwestern family in The Middle).

But a big push for fall is a fourth comedy, Modern Family, about three diverse suburban couples from the producers of Frasier. The entire pilot will be screened for advertisers.

ABC's goals: "We were looking to establish a comedy presence. Our Wednesday night has certainly been challenging for us and is something we wanted to improve on, and we were looking for event-style series" to generate buzz, says ABC Entertainment Group chief Steve McPherson."

ABC has signed British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver to star in a six-episode reality series to launch in August 2009. Oliver will travel to one of the most overweight cities in the United States and teach the residents how to cook and eat healthier.

ABC Television has been sucking up to Oliver for years, recently including this bit of lard from
Nick Watt of ABC News on February 23, 2009:

"Jamie Oliver is no longer just an English "bloke" with sweet sneakers and a wedge hair cut. Jamie Oliver is a global brand.

A simple show called "Jamie at Home" in which he, well, cooks at home, now airs in 108 countries. What began with a cookbook has become a publishing empire, a magazine called "Jamie" and lines of "Jamie Oliver" kitchen paraphernalia.

Oliver's reluctant realization of his brand status, and ultimately his embrace of that status, has propelled him to a new level of chefdom. He's become a campaigner."

ABC is bringing back "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire," according to a story in TV Week on April 22, 2009:

"ABC is bringing back the primetime version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” in August, nearly 10 years to the date after the iconic game show changed the face of American television.

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire

Regis Philbin has agreed to return as host of the primetime revival, which—like the 1999 original—will unfold as a two-week, 11-night event. Michael Davies of Embassy Row once again will serve as executive producer.

“Millionaire” will air Sunday through Thursday nights at 8 p.m., starting Aug. 9. The show will take a rest on Friday and Saturday. Its grand finale will be Sunday, Aug. 23."
