Charlie Wanted George, Not Diane, For Top Anchor Post, the NY Post's Page 6 reported on November 18, 2009:

"Charlie Gibson says on the record he has "tremendous respect and fondness" for Diane Sawyer, but insiders say he has trouble concealing his dislike of his ABC colleague.

"Charlie has always given Diane the stink eye. He bad-mouths her openly and often," said our source.

Gibson, 66, had been pushing ABC News president David Westin to promote George Stephanopoulos, the host of Sunday morning's "This Week," as his successor.

"He wanted George to get the job," said one source at the network. "He was shocked when he learned Diane got it, and he was really angry that she stole his thunder. As soon as she was named, it was all about Diane."

ABCNews.com Promotes Michalopoulos, O'Keefe

ABCNews president David Westin announced the promotions of ABCNews.com editorial leaders Deirdre Michalopoulos and Ed O'Keefe.

And O'Keefe was promoted to managing editor of ABCNews.com, assuming responsibility for daily production, managing technical issues and continuing to integrate initiatives such as redesign and search-engine optimization.

Michalopoulos and O'Keefe will continue to report to ABCNews.com vice president Jon Dube.

Stephanopoulos Switching Chairs?

The competition among the Sunday morning talk shows is heated if not feverish, dominated by the struggle of ABC's "This Week" to catch up with, and then overtake, NBC's longtime ratings champ "Meet the Press."

Now that contest has reached a new stage: ABC News bosses are talking to "This Week" moderator George Stephanopoulos, 48, about moving up to an anchor chair on the daily "Good Morning, America" show -- where Stephanopoulos would have to deal with baby-buggy recalls, interview movie stars, and pose for a never-ending series of publicity shots, perhaps including one of him dancing the Paso Doble.

Talks continue.

On September 2, 2009, ABC News announced that Charlie Gibson will leave "ABC World News" at the end of December, and that Diane Sawyer will be the new anchor of the network's evening newscast starting in January 2010.

Sawyer and Gibson worked together for years as co-anchors of "Good Morning America," until Gibson left to anchor "ABC World News" in 2006.

Gibson was named the anchor of "ABC World News" in May 2006. He replaced the team of Elizabeth Vargas and Bob Woodruff, after Woodruff was seriously wounded in an IED attack in Iraq.

Woodruff and Vargas became the co-anchors of the newscast in December 2005 after the death of longtime anchor Peter Jennings.

More tweets for ABC News twitterer George Stephanopoulos:

On March 13, 2009, Web Newser reported: "Last week, ABC's George Stephanopoulos conducted a back-and-forth Twitter exchange with Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill, who is one of the most prolific Twitterers in Congress.

Well now, the moderator of the Sunday morning public affairs show "This Week" will conduct his first Twitterview — an interview via Twitter — and he's doing it with Sen. John McCain."

February 28, 2009: Legendary radio announcer Paul Harvey died today at age 90. Jim Robinson, the president of ABC Radio Networks, issued this statement:

"Paul Harvey was one of the most gifted and beloved broadcasters in our nation’s history. As he delivered the news each day with his own unique style and commentary, his voice became a trusted friend in American households. His career in radio spanned more than seven decades, during which time countless millions of listeners were both informed and entertained by his “News & Comment” and “Rest of the Story” features. Even after the passing of his loving wife Angel in May 2008, Paul would not slip quietly into retirement as he continued to take the microphone and reach out to his audience. We will miss our dear friend tremendously and are grateful for the many years we were so fortunate to have known him. Our thoughts and prayers are now with his son Paul Jr. and the rest of the Harvey family."

February 10, 2009: During a speech accepting the Sol Taishoff Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism, given out at the National Press Foundation’s annual dinner, Charles Gibson said that people should pay for the news instead of getting it "free on the Internet:"

"I think we've made a terrible mistake giving our stuff away," Gibson said. "Why should someone pay 30 bucks a month for the New York Times when they can get it for free on the Internet? Why can't we stop the aggregators who rip off our work and distribute it for nothing? I don't know the answer to that, but I know there's got to be an answer. It probably will come after I'm gone, but I want it to come quickly."

On January 21, 2009, Gawker thought they had caught Diane Sawyer in a case of inaugural inebriation:

"The Inaugural Balls went on all night and it looks like Good Morning America's Diane Sawyer enjoyed the open bars. Thanks, ABC, for not pulling her off the air despite all this slurred nonsense.

Thanks to hero intern Bette Bentley for compiling this wonderful video of America's Drunkest Former Nixon Staffer Journalist mumbling things about children and boots."

On January 7, 2009, The Hollywood Reporter reported that ABC News will rely on BBC News for most news from Iraq:

"ABC News and the BBC are expanding their news partnership in Iraq, with ABC reducing its full-time presence there while relying on the BBC for day-to-day reports from inside the country.

ABC will continue to have a Baghdad bureau, though there will be fewer employees than there have been since the war began in 2003 and no full-time correspondent. ABC News will continue to have correspondents covering the war in Iraq, for larger stories like the upcoming elections as well as when the situation warrants.

"We will have a presence but significantly less than there was before," an ABC News executive who declined to be named told The Hollywood Reporter. "This is more of a reallocation of resources so we're not spending money for a substantial presence on the ground waiting for something to happen."

Now, the BBC's correspondents will cover any of the day-to-day stories the network will carry."
