MTV will celebrate its 28th birthday by remembering Michael Jackson.

On Saturday, August 1, 2009, MTV will celebrate its 28th birthday with three all-new tribute shows about pop superstar Michael Jackson. Viewers will see a mix of interviews, music videos and more about the artist throughout the day.

The event kicks off at noon ET/PT with the world premiere of "Michael Jackson's Human Nature." This half hour special will feature stories from the pop icon's friends and colleagues about Michael Jackson the human being, rather than the entertainer. Jackson touched many lives through his music and this show will tell the stories of the many people he impacted directly.

MTV is giving viewers 90 minutes of MJ's most popular videos as decided by their number of streams on mtv.com. "Michael Jackson's Top 10 Video Countdown" (12:30PM ET/PT) will also feature facts and trivia about each video, as well as rare interview footage of Michael discussing his hit singles.

At 2PM, MTV will present the world premiere of "Michael Jackson's Influence on Music," an hour-long special featuring a collection of the top videos from the many artists who have been influenced by the King of Pop. From Justin Timberlake to Usher, MTV viewers will be treated to the hits inspired by Michael Jackson.

MTV is picking up a second season of the series "16 and Pregnant." In addition, MTV will also air "16 and Pregnant: Life After Labor" finale special, hosted by Dr. Drew Pinsky, on Thursday, July 23rd at 10PM ET/PT. "16 & Pregnant" can currently be seen on Thursdays at 10PM ET/PT.

The series follows the lives of teenage girls for 5-7 months as they navigate the unfamiliar territory of being pregnant. MTV captured every moment and reaction in real time, including several of the births and how the young mothers and fathers dealt with new parenthood. The series tackles a variety of issues including marriage, adoption, attending school and dealing with gossip. Cameras continued to follow the teens for a significant amount of time after they gave birth to document how they coped with taking care of their infants in addition to balancing adult responsibilities with teenage life.

The "16 and Pregnant: Life After Labor" finale special, hosted by Dr. Drew Pinsky, will be an issue-driven forum on teen pregnancy. All six of the teen mothers profiled on season one of the series will participate. Dr. Drew will discuss each girl's episode, specific issues and challenges and update us on what's going on in their lives now. This open discussion will provide a platform to address the controversial topics that were shown in season one: birth control, adoption, abortion, marriage, religion, gossip, finances, high school graduation and employment.

MTV President of Programming Tony DiSanto unveiled a new slate of programs in development at MTV on June 23, 2009. They include comedy, scripted, animation, music and reality.

Projects range from following an aspiring wannabe superhero and his cohorts in "The Awesomes," showcasing the lives of Latino teenagers with a comedic spin in the "Adrienne Bailon Project" (working title), an adapted version of the international musical hit "Patito Feo," to chronicling the life of a desperately-unpopular teenager in "Hard Times." Jamie Foxx returns with the next generation of sketch comedy in the "Untitled Sketch Comedy Show" (working title) and drawing together horror, romance and werewolf mythology, MTV is developing a pilot based on the classic 80's movie "Teen Wolf."

MTV's 23rd Season of “The Real World” will be filmed in Washington DC:

The 23rd season of “The Real World” will begin production in Washington D. C. in the summer of 2009 and is slated to premiere in 2010. In the upcoming season, eight young adults will experience life in the nation’s capital as they live and pursue their passions in the city that many of our country’s most influential figures call home.

“The charged atmosphere of Washington D.C., the center of our country’s social and political change, will provide an electric setting for this next season of ‘The Real World,’ said Tony DiSanto, President of Programming, MTV.

February 12, 2009: Writing at the Marketwatch web site, Jon Friedman argued that Viacom needs to fix MTV's image:

"Sumner Redstone, the company patriarch, has long boasted of MTV's influence on popular culture around the world. But MTV has yet to develop as many hits as it did in its heyday, when stars like Cindy Crawford sparkled on the cable network.

Just as Viacom can be considered a casualty of the media world's advertising slump and the national recession, MTV is also suffering from an inability to cope with the changes that the industry has seen in recent years. Thanks to technological advances, young consumers don't need to watch MTV on television to learn about the latest cultural and fashion trends or cement friendships.

Viacom, like many other large media concerns, appeared to fail to anticipate the coming of the Internet and, as a result, didn't adequately find ways to take advantage of the Web until it was too late for Viacom to exert what might have been a big competitive advantage. "

On December 19, 2008, Variety reported that MTV is planning 16 new reality shows, even as its ratings drop dramatically:

"In trying to keep its hold on young and fickle audiences, MTV over the decades has undergone some fundamental programming shifts, but never before on this scale.

The cabler's recent ratings declines include a 23% fourth-quarter drop in its core demo of 12- to 34-year-olds. So MTV is embarking on a major programming overhaul, with 16 new unscripted series over the next 4 months.

The series come from high-profile producers including Sean Combs, Matt Stone & Trey Parker, Donald Trump and Nick Lachey. And they represent a major thematic shift for the channel -- more toward the meta-scripted reality of MTV's "The Hills," one of the cabler's few success stories these days.

While MTV pioneered reality series with 1992's "The Real World," that genre has become ubiquitous, so the network is offering a slate that avoids the backbiting and bitchery of most nonfiction fare.

"Our new shows will feature themes of affirmation and accomplishment," says Brian Graden, prez of entertainment at MTV Networks music channels and president of Logo. "Our shows are going to focus less on loud and silly hooks and more on young people proving themselves. These are themes that are consistent with the Obama generation."
