Ex-Editor Sues Post, Alleges "Pervasive Racism and Sexism"

The E&P Pub reported on November 10, 2009:

"A former New York Post editor who claims she was fired after complaining about sexism and racism -- including an infamous cartoon that appeared to liken President Barack Obama to a chimp -- has sued the paper.

Reuters reports that Sandra Guzman, a black associate editor, claims she was fired Sept. 29 "in retaliation for complaints about allegedly pervasive racism and sexism at the newspaper."

The Huffington Post reveals the allegations range from a Post executive referring to Guzman as "Cha Cha #1" to a senior editor offering a reporting job to a female copy assistant in exchange for oral sex."

Two-Bit Increase Decimates Circulation Numbers at New York Post, the New York Times reported on November 8, 2009:

"Nearly every paper in America has lost circulation, but The Post more than most — down almost 30 percent in 2.5 years. The slide accelerated after The Post’s price returned to 50 cents last year.

With a proliferation of online news sources, it is harder than ever for a paper to be a must-read, said Donald Forst, the former top editor of New York Newsday, The Village Voice and The Boston Herald.

“The tabloids still do the things they used to do, but a lot of it doesn’t feel as compelling,” Mr. Forst said. "There's so much gossip out there that you can go lots of other places, and I think it’s hurt The Post especially.”

Alyson Campbell, founder of AMP3 Public Relations, gave PR Newswer 5 tips to get a story into Page Six of the New York Post on September 28 2009:

"Here are Campbell's top five tips on how to get your item into Page Six.

1. Be realistic, is your item really Page Six-worthy?

2. If so, how is your item relevant? Tie it in to a scandal or hot topic of some sort that is currently taking place.

3. Clearly identify in your subject line if this is an "Item," a "Sighting," or a "We Hear...": the three types of bits they run in Page Six daily.

4. Keep your pitch short, exciting and concise, including at least one boldface name, and be sure to pitch the news to Page Six exclusively. I like to send in my gossip tips in 'headline speak,' using the same tone that they use to write their one-liner items.

5. Make sure all sources and spokespeople are going to be readily accessible, in the event of fact checking or requests for comment, as turnaround on Page Six is very quick."

In "Free To Be Ignored," posted on May 21, 2009 at The Big Money blog, James Ledbetter offers a very funny (and very likely fictional) anecdote about the Post:

The rationale that Bloomingdale's CEO Marvin Traub supposedly gave to Rupert Murdoch for not advertising in the New York Post: "Your readers are our shoplifters."

New York Post circulation dropped like a rock in the six months through March 31, 2009, according to numbers from the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) released on April 27, 2009.

The New York Post had a circulation decline of 20.6%, to 558,140. As a result it has fallen behind rival the New York Daily News, which lost 14.3% to 602,857. Previously the two papers were running neck-and-neck in circulation.

For all 395 daily papers surveyed by the ABC, weekday circulation fell 7%, from 37,066,075 last year to 34,439,713.

February 24, 2009: The New York Times reported that the New York Post is dropping Liz Smith's gossip column:

" After Thursday, the gossip columnist Liz Smith will not have a home in a New York City tabloid for the first time in 33 years. The New York Post — which has published her gossip column since the days when Donald was still married to Marla and Christie Brinkley was still married to Ricky Taubman — is dropping her column, citing hard times.

“Like so many other newspapers around the nation, we are buffeted by unprecedented economic gales,” Col Allan, the editor in chief of The Post, told Ms. Smith in a Feb. 9 letter that said he was not renewing the contract for what he called her “legendary column.”

Even for Ms. Smith, who turned 86 on Feb. 2, tabloids are so last century. She plans to concentrate on that newer medium, the Internet. She is a founder and part owner of the 11-month-old site wowOwow, for “women on Web,” and said she looked forward to posting scoops there — “free,” she said, “from the constraints of newspaper deadlines.”"

February 19, 2009: The little monkeys at the New York Post have had second thoughts about the wisdom of the so-called Obama chimp cartoon:

"Wednesday's Page Six cartoon - caricaturing Monday's police shooting of a chimpanzee in Connecticut - has created considerable controversy.

It shows two police officers standing over the chimp's body: "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill," one officer says.

It was meant to mock an ineptly written federal stimulus bill.

Period.

But it has been taken as something else - as a depiction of President Obama, as a thinly veiled expression of racism.

This most certainly was not its intent; to those who were offended by the image, we apologize."

February 19, 2009: Media Life reported that the New York Post is defending its Obama chimp cartoon:

"Is Al Sharpton overly sensitive, or did a New York Post cartoonist overstep his bounds? Bloggers and readers alike were abuzz yesterday over a cartoon that appeared in yesterday’s Post, in which two police officers were shown talking after shooting a large monkey. Said one cop to the other, “They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill,” a clear reference to President Barack Obama.

The cartoonist, Sean Delonas, was making a play on the shooting of a chimpanzee earlier this week in Connecticut after the monkey mauled a human, but many were bothered by the use of the monkey imagery to depict Obama, the nation’s first black president. Sharpton called the cartoon, “troubling at best given the historic racist attacks of African-Americans as being synonymous with monkeys.” Protesters gathered at the Post building and demanded an apology, and the paper was inundated with phone calls. But editor Col Allan dismissed the criticism, saying, “It broadly mocks Washington's efforts to revive the economy. Again, Al Sharpton reveals himself as nothing more than a publicity opportunist.”"

On January 29, 2009, FishbowlNY reported that Page Six magazine will switch from weekly to quarterly publication:

"The entire staff of Page Six Magazine will be packing up their desks on the heels of today's announcement that the weekly New York Post insert would move to a quarterly publication schedule. A former staffer tells FishbowlNY that the only full-time employee left standing will be editor-in-chief Margi Conklin, who will put out the magazine with a team of freelancers after the final weekly edition gets tucked into the Post on Sunday, February 15, 2009.

However, it's not all heartbreak once the mag moves to its quarterly schedule just after Valentine's Day...

Our tipster assured us "anybody who is [currently] involved with the magazine will probably be asked to help out" on a freelance basis when it's time for Conklin to put together those quarterly issues, since "everyone there really likes each other." Here's hoping, as the dishy, fashion and celeb-obsessed glossy had a reputation for paying handsomely, with some freelancers enjoying rates of $2/word. Still other media watchers aren't surprised, pointing out that the mag's delayed Web debut this summer -- nearly a year after the pub launched in 2007 -- didn't bode well."
