In the August 10 & 17 2009 issue of The New Yorker magazine, television critic Nancy Franklin explained VH1's approach to popular culture:

"...put it all into a blender, puree it until you can't tell one ingredient from another, and feed it to boy ironists (and the occasional girl) who then spit the mixture up against the wall for their - and supposedly, our - amusement."

VH1 announced on August 24, 2009 that it has canceled the two shows -- "Megan Wants a Millionaire" and "I Love Money 3" -- that featured Ryan Jenkins, who committed suicide in a Hope, British Columbia motel on August 23, 2009. On August 20, 2009, California authorities charged Jenkins with murder in the death of pin-up model Jasmine Fiore.

In the Calgary Herald on August 25, 2009, Robert Remington wrote about "Ryan Jenkins and reality TV culture:"

"Jenkins, judging from the court record, was the perfect reality TV dating contestant — a vain, spoiled, self-absorbed, sexually addicted millionaire who couldn't handle rejection. He appears to have had the type of personality that feeds the reality TV machine, where ratings are built on shallow men with big egos seeking materialistic trophy wives.

His self-inflicted death in a low-rent B.C. motel makes him the latest in a long line of tragedies involving volatile reality "stars" who have slashed their wrists, overdosed on painkillers and committed murder either during or after their 15 minutes of fame. Around the world, reality TV has caused humiliated contestants to either kill others or kill or injure themselves. The fugitive Ryan Jenkins is dead, but reality TV is still on the loose, spreading its mayhem."

VH1 has greenlighted three new series and ordered additional seasons of two favorites, the cable network announced on July 29, 2009.

VH1 has teamed up with Sandra "Pepa" Denton of Salt n Pepa and Chilli from TLC - giving each hip-hop artist her own series revolving around their current lives as single women. The yet-to-be titled "Pepa" and "Chilli" series will premiere on VH1 in 2010.

The Entertainer, from the "I Love NY" and "I Love Money" shows has also scored his own series called "The Entertainer," featuring his parents as well as the infamous basement bachelor pad. VH1 has also renewed two other hit series: "Celebrity Fit Club" (season 7) and "Sober House with Dr. Drew" (season 2).

These programming additions come on the heels of recent announcements about upcoming new original primetime series on VH1 including Jessica Simpson's new series "The Price Of Beauty;" a series centered on the family and career of American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino as she refocuses and tries to get her career back on track with the untitled "Fantasia" series; "The OCD Project," centering on OCD patients living together as they strive to overcome their disorder; and "The Aspen Project," focusing on the highs and lows of living and dating in one of the wealthiest communities in the world.

The music and pop culture network's total primetime viewership was up 12% during the second quarter of 2009 compared to the same period the year before. And, the network has launched nine new and returning series averaging at least 1 million total viewers in their premiere episodes.
