USA Today Continues Wage Freeze and Orders Week-Long Furloughs for All Employees

Editor & Publisher reported on February 11, 2010:

"USA Today, with its ad pages down 10.5% in the last quarter, is chopping expenses again, ordering all employees to take a week-long unpaid furlough and extending for another three months the freeze on salary increases imposed a year ago.

In a memo to employees Thursday, USA Today Publisher David Hunke said all employees must take a full week's furlough between Feb. 28 and July 3.

"To be clear, a furlough means no one will be permitted to work while on furlough and no one will be exempt, except for business necessity," he wrote. "That means when you are on furlough, there is no work, no office phone calls, no voice mail, no e-mail and no PDA checking. Exempt, salaried employees must take one full payroll week within the pay period. Non-exempt, hourly employees can take five days at any pre-approved time."

Doritos Fan-Created Super Bowl Ad Scores No. 2 on USA Today Ad Meter and $600,000 Prize

Plano, Texas, February 8, 2010 -- Doritos tortilla chips today announced that its consumer-created Doritos commercial, "Underdog," which aired for the first time nationally during yesterday's Super Bowl XLIV broadcast, placed second in USA Today's annual consumer-ranked Super Bowl Ad Meter. This is the fourth year in a row a consumer-created Doritos ad has ranked in the top five and the first time Doritos aired four ads during the Super Bowl. Now, Doritos is paying the talented creator a $600,000 prize for proving that when given the opportunity, amateurs truly can compete with the pros.

Nationwide consumer votes put "Casket," "House Rules," "Snack Attack Samurai" and "Underdog" in the Super Bowl spotlight, from six finalist ads in the fourth annual Doritos "Crash the Super Bowl" program.

For taking the No. 2 spot, Joshua Svoboda, creator of "Underdog" will receive $600,000.

Last year, two unemployed brothers from Batesville, Indiana received $1 million from the Doritos brand for trumping the Madison Avenue-made commercials and ranking number one in the USA Today Ad Meter with their homemade Doritos commercial that they created for less than $2,000. It was a bold move that changed the brothers' lives forever and kick-started their now-thriving careers in film and television.

Cable & Internet Became Major TV Players In The Last Decade, USA Today reported on December 28, 2009:

"At the broadcast networks, which saw their overall numbers drop by around 8 million viewers, it was 10 years of ratings decline. Yet if those viewers were lost to broadcast, they were found by cable — and what those viewers found was an ever-expanding range of choice.

But don't cry for broadcast yet. They may be smaller fish, but they're still by far the biggest in the electronic pond.

And the upside to smaller ratings: Lower expectations allow shows to thrive that would never have survived back when every series had to be a blockbuster."

USA Today Travel Editor Bids Adieu, Quickly, On Her Blog, December 4, 2009:

"I’ve been laid off from my dream job, and I’m not going to lie. It sucks. I enjoyed almost everything about my immediate world there.

Increasingly, things have become more interesting outside the newsroom bubble. I’d go to conferences and meet people who were making it just fine on their own.

These freelancers-slash-entrepreneurs are my role models, as I join their ranks.

So to the managers who made this decision, in less than 140 characters I tell you: Good luck steering the Titanic. And thanks for the head start. Now I’m really going to run."

USA Today is cutting 26 jobs and is merging operations with USA Weekend magazine, which will result in 11 more jobs being lost, Michael Calderone of Politico reported on December 1, 2009:

"USA Today editor John Hillkirk, in a memo obtained by POLITICO, wrote that those laid off will “be notified today or as soon as possible.”

In a second memo, staffers were informed that there will be a merger between USA Today's news operation and USA WEEKEND. At the magazine, four jobs will be cut now; there will be seven more by March 31, as the transition is completed.

The moves come on the same day that parent-company Gannett announced the institution of furloughs for 2010, just as they did this year."

USA Today Opens New Bureau -- For Advertisers

Forbes.com reported on November 16, 2009:

"You can call it McResearch, but advertisers want in. The Buzz Bureau has undertaken 20 projects this year, bringing in client fees from $30,000 to $1 million.

Launched two months ago, the bureau is a two-woman operation that marshals aid from across all of USA Today's departments. They put together custom graphics and inserts for advertisers, and sell polling data, access to subscriber lists and data analytics about readers to marketers.

"Any newspaper can do research or special distributions. What we try to do is things only USA Today can do," says Susan Lavington, the paper's senior vice president of marketing and overseer of the bureau.

"We do a ton of polling, only a small portion of which actually appears in stories," says Lavington. "We'd like to mine this data for other insights and sell it."

As Publisher David Hunke acknowledged on October 9, 209, USA Today circulation dropped by 398,000 copies per day during the six month period ending September 2009.

The sharp decline, from well over 2 million copies per day to 1,880,000 copies, means that USA Today is no longer the largest circulation daily newspaper in the country. That title now belongs to The Wall Street Journal.
