As Publisher David Hunke acknowledged on October 9, 209, USA Today circulation dropped by 398,000 copies per day during the six month period ending September 2009.

The sharp decline, from well over 2 million copies per day to 1,880,000 copies, means that USA Today is no longer the largest circulation daily newspaper in the country. That title now belongs to The Wall Street Journal.

USA Today Publisher David Hunke discussed the newspaper's circulation decline of 398,000 copies a day in a memo to staff dated October 9, 2009:

From: USA TODAY Publisher
Subject: USA TODAY Circulation
To: USA TODAY Staff

From: Dave Hunke, President & Publisher USA TODAY

As we have anticipated, when the latest ABC Fas Fax circulation report is released on October 26, USA TODAY will post a circulation decline of 398,000 copies per day.

The significant downturn in the economy and its impact on the travel industry are obviously having a domino effect showing in our circulation losses. Before this year, our largest circulation declines came after the attacks of September 11th in 2001. And when the travel industry rebounded in the months that followed, USA TODAY did, too. We fully expect to see circulation increases again as the economy recovers. I'm encouraged by the fact that despite the tough travel economy, we have not lost a single hotel relationship during this recession.

We are aware of the impact this decline may have on advertising, recognizing circulation is one of the factors to affect advertising rates. However, advertising rates are also calculated on a number of other variables as well. The quality of our editorial content and the quality of our audience remain a strong draw for advertisers. Released last month, the Mendelsohn survey of affluent readers (household income of $100,000-plus) reports USA TODAY has more than 3.5 million affluent readers – substantially more than either the Wall Street Journal or the New York Times.

Even with this latest economic impact, USA TODAY remains the nation's number one newspaper in total print circulation. We know these circulation declines are temporary and as the economy continues to recover and the travel industry rebounds, we know our circulation will rebound with it.

The FBI kept records about Walter Cronkite, but destroyed them in 2007, USA Today reported on September 23, 2009:

"The FBI destroyed its files on former CBS News anchorman Walter Cronkite two years ago under a policy that has been criticized by researchers for allowing potentially valuable records to be wiped out.

A search of the agency's main index of the subjects of FBI investigations found some records tied to Cronkite's name were destroyed in October 2007, the FBI said in response to a Freedom of Information Act request by USA TODAY. Cronkite's death in July at age 92 made any FBI files about him available for release under the federal law."

David Hunke, the new publisher of USA Today, sees a future for paid web content at the newspaper, Editor & Publisher reported on May 1, 2009:

"Fresh from implementing a major shake-up at Detroit's two major dailies -- which cutback home delivery under his watch -- David Hunke is ready to make major changes at USA Today if need be.

Named president and publisher of the Gannett Co. flagship earlier this week, Hunke -- former CEO of the Detroit Media Partnership -- says some paid content could emerge on the USA Today Web site and he is not shy about making other innovations if they are required.

"I do have a little experience shaking things up, don’t I?" Hunke, 57, joked Thursday, two days after being named publisher. "We've got to take an immediate look at alignment, alignment of the circulation footprint creating an audience, content attracting and retaining audience, and selling advertising against that audience."

USA Today advertising sales dropped like a rock in the first quarter of 2009, Gannett company CFO Gracia Martore said during an earnings call on April 16, 2009:

"National advertising was lower as well in the quarter but was slightly better in March compared to January and February. Advertising revenue was about 34% lower at U.S.A. Today. The telecom, pharmaceutical and advocacy categories were positive in the quarter although weakness in the entertainment, travel and financial categories overshadowed those gains."

Craig Moon is retiring as the president and publisher of USA Today, Gannett announced on March 31, 2009:

"Craig Moon, president and publisher of USA TODAY, today said he plans to retire on April 17 after more than 23 years at Gannett. Moon also supervises USA WEEKEND, the Detroit Media Partnership, Gannett Offset and the Military Times operation.

“Craig has been a steady hand, a defender of strong journalism and a true champion of the USA TODAY brand in his six years as president and publisher of our flagship newspaper,” said Craig Dubow, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Gannett Co., Inc.(NYSE: GCI). “He has combined his love of the newspaper business with a grasp of the digital future in ways that benefited not only USA TODAY but also the entire company. We will miss his counsel and his expertise.”

Moon was named president and publisher of USA TODAY in 2003. At the time, he was executive vice president of the Newspaper Division, now U.S. Community Publishing. From 1991 until 2002, Moon was president and publisher of The Tennessean in Nashville. He also was president of the Piedmont Newspaper Group of Gannett.

He joined Gannett in 1985 as vice president/advertising of The Cincinnati Enquirer and The Cincinnati Post. He also has been president and publisher of The News-Press in Fort Myers, FL, and of the Arkansas Gazette in Little Rock.

On January 30, 2009, the Wall Street Journal reported that ad sales at USA Today plunged in the fourth quarter of 2008:

"A troubling sign for Gannett is the performance of USA Today, which has held up much better than the company's smaller community papers. Ad revenues at the 2.3 million-circulation flagship fell 19% in the fourth quarter after declining 8% during the first nine months of the year. Still, USA Today outperformed the company's entire publishing division, where ad revenue fell 23% for the quarter.

The community papers continue to be hardest hit because of their dependence on revenue from classified advertising, which was down 31% for the quarter at those papers. USA Today was dragged down by weakness in the entertainment, automotive, retail and travel categories."

On January 16, 2009, the Associated Press reported that USA Today will stop publishing an international edition:

"USA Today said Friday it will stop publishing its international edition on Feb. 6 but will look for partners in Europe and South America to continue operating it.

Under such an arrangement, similar to one USA Today recently launched in the Caribbean, USA Today would produce the articles, photos and other content, and the partners would print the newspaper locally and sell ads themselves. USA Today would get an unspecified per-copy licensing fee.

"This allows us to continue our international presence under more favorable financial conditions," USA Today said in a statement to The Associated Press.

The paper said discussions were continuing, but it gave no timetable or word on prospects.

USA Today, published by McLean, Va.-based Gannett Co., is the nation's top-selling newspaper with an average daily circulation of 2.3 million. About 60,000 is for the international edition."

On December 17, 2008, Editor & Publisher magazine reported that Ken Paulson is leaving USA Today after four years as the editor of the newspaper:

USA Today Editor Ken Paulson is planning to leave the paper and become president and COO of the Newseum and Freedom Forum, the paper announced this afternoon.

Paulson, 55, succeeds Peter Prichard in the Newseum post, a Newseum announcement stated. Prichard will work on special projects for one year before retiring.

The change in Newseum leadership was announced by Charles L. Overby, chairman and CEO of the Freedom Forum and CEO of the Newseum.

“We are very pleased that Ken is returning to play a major role in shaping the future of our organizations,” Overby said in a statement. “He is recognized nationally as an important leader in First Amendment and news issues and his proven leadership qualities will help us continue to develop and expand the reach of our world-class museum.”

A memo from Publisher Craig Moon details Paulson's Feb. 1 departure date, but names no replacement yet.
