Jan Egeland, from his new book "A Billion Lives: An Eyewitness Report from the Frontlines of Humanity." Egeland was the United Nations Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator from June 2003 to December 2006. In that role he worked to resolve conflicts in Uganda and the Darfur region of Sudan, and was involved in relief efforts following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, among other natural disasters.
Reviewing Egeland\'s book in the June 26, 2008 edition of The New York Review of Books, Brian Urquhart wrote: "Egeland is convinced that the condition of most people in the world is getting better, and that with the help of international organizations the improvement can be steadily extended. Millions have received relief and even improved security as wars ended. He writes that we now have the technology and the institutions to end "the massive suffering that is taking place on our watch," although he adds that "we are only on the first leg of a long marathon toward coherent and predictable multilateral action for all vulnerable communities."
