During the week of July 17, 2006, the United States Senate passed a measure to permit federal government funding of stem cell research using human embryos created through in vitro fertilization. The same week, President George W. Bush vetoed the legislation, marking the first legislative veto of his administration.
Because stem cells have the potential to grow into any tissue or organ in the body, scientists believe that they hold great promise for treating and curing diseases. But because human embryos are destroyed in extracting the cells, the research is opposed by abortion opponents, including the Roman Catholic Church.
