On June 3, 2008, Senator Barack Obama won enough primary votes to secure the Democratic party nomination for the 2008 U.S. presidential election campaign. After defeating Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Obama became the first African-American presidential nominee in U.S. history.
In February 2008, Senator John McCain won the primary race to become the Republican party candidate for president, following the withdrawal of Mitt Romney from the contest.
