With the presidential election less than a month away, most polls say that the race between Republican Senator John McCain and Democratic Senator Barack Obama remains close.
On Tuesday, October 7 2008, Obama and McCain debated before 80 undecided voters and a national television audience in a town-hall setting at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee.
The debate came with an average of polls giving Obama an edge in the race to succeed President George W. Bush. McCain was trailing his Democratic challenger by nearly six percentage points in the latest average of polls from RealClear Politics.
Calling the current financial crisis the worst since the Great Depression, Obama said it was "a final verdict on the failed economic policies of the last eight years" that McCain supported. Obama called for aiding homeowners and middle-class tax cuts to help Americans reeling from the crisis. McCain said the government should help Americans stay in their homes and also repeated his calls for energy independence and not raising taxes.
The last presidential debate between Obama and McCain was held October 15 at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. Topics were the economy and domestic policy.
