Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona, speaking during his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination in 2000. McCain said that "American elections today are an influence peddling scheme in which both parties compete to stay in office by selling the country to the highest bidder."
In January 2007, officials of the Federal Election Commission said they expect the two candidates who contest the 2008 presidential election will each raise over $500 million by election day, which is November 4, 2008. Advisers to several possible presidential candidates confirmed that total spending on the 2008 presidential campaign could easily exceed $1 billion.
Michael E. Toner, a comissioner of the Federal Election Commission, said that "The 2008 race will be the longest and most expensive presidential election in American history. Top-tier candidates are going to have to raise $100 million by the end of 2007 to be a serious candidate. We are looking at a $100 million entry fee."
Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) has already decided to forgo public financing for the primary and general elections in 2008. In effect, she has indicated that she is confident she will be able to raise more than the roughly $150 million that public financing would provide for the presidential primaries and general election. Republican Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, has also decided to do without public financing.
