H.L. Mencken (1880–1956), widely regarded as one of the most influential American writers of the early 20th century. Mencken was a journalist, author, satirist and social critic whose trenchant and often cutting thoughts are still frequently cited in the American media. Early in his career he was a reporter for the Baltimore Morning Herald and the Baltimore Sun.
On his gravestone in the Loudon Park Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland, is the epitaph Mencken wrote many years before his death: "If, after I depart this vale, you ever remember me and have thought to please my ghost, forgive some sinner, and wink your eye at some homely girl."
