Paul Krugman of the New York Times, from the op-ed article "Shock and awe just doesn't work" published in the July 31, 2006 edition of the newspaper.

Krugman was referring to the latest war between Israel and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, which began on July 12, 2006, when Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers and killed eight. He wrote that the Israeli bombing campaign "clearly isn't crippling Hezbollah, but is destroying Lebanon's infrastructure and killing lots of civilians." He argued that as a result of the bombing and Israel's invasion of southern Lebanon, "Hezbollah has acquired heroic status."
