The quote is by U.S. Air Force General Curtis E. LeMay (1906 - 1990). LeMay was the leader of the U.S. air offense against Japan at the end of World War II, and the bombing raids he commanded devastated many Japanese cities and resulted in an estimated half a million deaths. Asked later about the morality of the campaign against Japan, LeMay replied: "Every soldier thinks something of the moral aspects of what he is doing. But all war is immoral and if you let that bother you, you\'re not a good soldier."

LeMay was also the head of the Strategic Air Command (SAC), Chief of Staff of the Air Force and a candidate for Vice President of the United States on segregationist George Wallace's ticket in 1968. An advocate of the aggressive use of military force, the phrase "we should bomb Vietnam back into the stone age" is often attributed to him.
