The Indianapolis Star, often called The IndyStar, is the leading newspaper in Indianapolis, the state capital of Indiana. It has been owned by the Gannett Company since 2000. The Star was first published in June 1903. It began as a morning newspaper in competition with two other dailies, the Indianapolis Journal and the Indianapolis Sentinel, which it eventually took over.
The Star was preceded by the Indianapolis News, an afternoon publication which would become Indiana's largest newspaper known as "The Great Hoosier Daily." Consumer preference for morning delivery led to the decline of the Indianapolis News. In 1995, the newsroom staffs of The Star and The News merged, but the editorial staffs and pages remained separate. On October 1, 1999, The Indianapolis News published its last edition.
