The Lexington Herald-Leader covers news and events in the Lexington metropolitan area and central and eastern Kentucky. The newspaper is the result of the 1983 merger of the Lexington Herald and the Lexington Leader.
The story of the Herald-Leader began in 1870 with a newspaper known as the Lexington Daily Press, which in 1905 became the Lexington Herald. The Lexington Leader started publishing in 1888. The two papers came under common ownership when Leader owner John G. Stoll bought the Herald in 1937. Knight Newspapers bought them in 1973 and merged them on January 1, 1983. The McClatchy Company acquired the paper in 2006 when it acqured Knight Ridder.

The Lexington Herald-Leader Names Richard Green Editor
-- In September 2023, Richard Green succeeded Peter Baniak as the executive editor of the Lexington Herald-Leader. Baniak, who had been editor since 2009, was promoted to vice president of news for small and medium markets for McClatchy.
