The Shreveport Sun is Louisiana's oldest Black weekly newspaper still in publication. It describes itself as "Covering The Ark-La-Tex Like The Sunshine!" - refering to the tri-state region of south Arkansas, northwest Louisiana and northeast Texas.
The newspaper began publication on November 6, 1920 and was founded by Melvin Lee Collins, Sr. Collins graduated from Straight University in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 2021, the Collins family continues to be actively involved in running the paper "to keep "The Old Man's" legacy alive."
This publication is a member of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), an association of African American-owned community newspapers in the United States.
