The station is dedicated to serving the rural Alaska and Alaska Native communities in the region by providing news, educational programs, cultural enrichment and the opportunity for language maintenance for cultural survival.

KYUK AM was launched in 1971 and KYUK television followed in 1972. The stations are owned by Bethel Broadcasting, Inc., a Native American-initiated 501c(3) non-profit corporation.

-- In March 2014, Daysha Eaton was named news director of KYUK AM 640. She replaced Angela Denning-Barnes who moved to KFSK public radio in Petersburg in February.
