Founded in 1975, O Jornal publishes Portuguese-language news and information in Fall River and southern New England. The newspaper serves the largest ethnic group in southeastern Massachusetts. O Jornal was founded in 1975 by Azorean community leaders. Through the years its readership expanded from Fall River to New Bedford and more than 20 communities in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. In 2007, O Jornal created O Jornal Brasileiro, a Brazilian companion to the more Portuguese-American oriented O Jornal.
The newspaper was acquired by GateHouse Media in 2007. On November 19, 2019, the paper became part of Gannett Company when the owner of GateHouse Media bought Gannett and merged it with GateHouse under the Gannett name.
