The "Tab" suffix refers to the newspaper's former tabloid format and its first publisher, Tab Communications Inc., a weekly newspaper publisher in the greater Boston area based first in Newton, Massachusetts then in nearby Needham. The company was acquired by Fidelity Investments in 1992 and merged into Community Newspaper Company (CNC) in 1996.
In 2001, Fidelity sold CNC to Herald Media, the publisher of the Boston Herald. In 2006, CNC was purchased by GateHouse Media. On November 19, 2019, the paper became part of Gannett Company when the owner of GateHouse Media bought Gannett and merged the two companies under the Gannett name.

-- April 20, 2013: The capture of the second Marathon terrorist was a blessing but as I watched and listened to all the law officials and politicians pour praise upon one another I couldn't help but notice only "one" (Watertown Police Chief,or commissioner ??) individual gave thanks to the vigilant, observing individual (lady)in Watertown most responsible for the capture and possible saving of other...Also in Massachusetts...
