The Pioneer Press calls itself "Minnesota's first newspaper" and covers news in the Twin Cities metropolitan area of Minneapolis and St. Paul. The Pioneer Press is based in St. Paul, the capital city of Minnesota, while Minneapolis is the largest city in the state and home of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the state's largest newspaper.

The Pioneer Press began with the Minnesota Pioneer, the state's first newspaper founded in 1849, and the St. Paul Dispatch, founded in 1868. Ridder Publications bought the two papers in 1927 and in 1985 (as Knight-Ridder Inc.) merged them to form the St. Paul Pioneer Press and Dispatch. The paper took its current name in 1990. After McClatchy Company acquired Knight-Ridder in 2006, it sold the Pioneer Press to MediaNews Group Inc., which filed for bankruptcy protection in 2010 and was acquired by private equity company Alden Global Capital LLC.
