The Missoulian covers local news, events and life in the city of Missoula and across Missoula County in western Montana.

The newspaper began publishing in 1870 as the Missoula & Cedar Creek Pioneer. The name of the paper was changed a number of times, to The Missoula Pioneer (1873), The Montana Pioneer (1872), The Weekly Missoulian (1873) and finally The Missoulian (1899). In 1959, then-owner the Anaconda Copper Mining Company sold the Missoulian and its other Montana newspapers, including the Billings Gazette, to Lee Enterprises of Iowa.
