It was established in 1895 by the merge of two diocesan newspapers, it is the official newspaper of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. CatholicPhilly.com is the digital successor to the paper and continues the mission of the former print publication.

Catholic Standard & Times to Become Monthly; Magazine to Launch
-- On March 30, 2011, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported on the publication changes:
"After 116 years -- and a decade of declining circulation -- the Archdiocese of Philadelphia is converting its weekly newspaper to a monthly and launching a glossy magazine.
Begun in 1895 with the merger of two diocesan newspapers, the Catholic Standard and Times was delivered to more than 100,000 homes in the mid-20th century."
