The Republican Herald covers local news and opinion in the city of Pottsville and the surrounding communities of Schuylkill County in eastern Pennsylvania. In 1979, writers Gilbert M. Gaul and Elliot G. Jaspin won a Pulitzer Prize for Local Investigative Specialized Reporting for stories on the destruction of the Blue Coal Company by men with ties to organized crime.

On August 31, 2023, MediaNews Group, which is controlled by hedge fund Alden Global Capital, acquired the newspapers of Times-Shamrock Communications, including its four dailies -- the Scranton Times-Tribune, The Wilkes-Barre Citizens' Voice, Pottsville Republican Herald and Hazelton Standard-Speaker.
