The Memphis Commercial Appeal, known locally as "The CA," is the leading newspaper in Memphis and Shelby County, Tennessee. The paper began on April 21, 1841 when Col. Henry Van Pelt's first issue of The Memphis Appeal was published. The name referred to the "sober second thought of the people," which in Van Pelt's view was "never wrong and always efficient."
In 1894, the Appeal was bought by rival newspaper the Memphis Commercial, resulting in the first edition of the Commercial Appeal being published on July 1, 1894. Its founding policies said it would "labor for the success of the Democratic Party and Democratic principles" and "promote the welfare and prosperity of the South."
Circulation estimate: 118,978

The Commercial Appeal is a left-wing rag. It's subscriptions have been in a continuous nose-dive for years and it is nothing but a shadow of what it once was. If you've never read an edition of this paper, don't bother; you're not missing anything. About the only people who get any use out of this paper in Memphis are the homeless; they use the paper for blankets and for toilet wipes.
