Texas Observer is a magazine in Austin, Texas, USA covering local news, sports, business, politics and community events.

Launched in 1954 by Frankie Randolph, The Texas Observer covers issues ignored or under-reported in the mainstream press. It is published bimonthly with stories about politics, the environment, civil rights and health care. Its goal is "to expose injustice and to produce the kind of impact journalism that changes people's lives for the better."

The 501(c)(3) nonprofit Texas Democracy Foundation publishes the Texas Observer. The magazine does not endorse candidates or legislation.

This publication is a member of the Association of Alternative Newsmedia (AAN). AAN is a group of newspapers and magazines providing journalism that offers an alternative to the mainstream media in the area.

This magazine is owned by Texas Democracy Foundation.

Turmoil at Texas Observer Magazine
-- The progressive magazine based in Austin, Texas has been in turmoil since Editor-in-Chief Tristan Ahtone resigned in September 2021. Publisher Mike Kanin followed in October, and the rush for the exits gained momentum. Bad decisions and inaction by the board of the nonprofit organization have played a big role.
