Petersburg Progress-Index

The Petersburg Progress-Index is a daily newspaper in Petersburg, Virginia, USA covering local news, sports, business, politics and community events.

The newspaper is published seven days a week.

The Petersburg Progress-Index covers local news in Petersburg and southeastern Virginia. It was published in the afternoons until 2005, when it switched to morning delivery. In 2014, Times-Shamrock Communications sold the newspaper to GateHouse Media, which merged with Gannett Company on November 19, 2019 and took the Gannett name. On August 31, 2020, Gannett shut down the Progress-Index printing presses and outsourced circulation and production to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

First published July 4, 1865, the Progress-Index was initially called The Index. The newspaper and its predecessors are believed to have been the first paper in Virginia and possibly the first in the nation with an African-American editor.
