Style Weekly calls itself "Richmond's alternative for news, arts, and culture." Founded in 1982, the weekly newspaper was shut down after publishing the September 8, 2021 issue by owner Tribune Publishing Company following Tribune's acquisition this past May by hedge fund Alden Global Capital. Alden is known for buying distressed businesses and cutting costs to generate profits.
On November 18, 2021, public media company VPM Media Corporation, the parent company of Virginia Public Media which operates WCVE FM 88.9 and WCVE TV 23 in Richmond, said it has purchased Style Weekly. VPM CEO Jayme Swain said the deal would help the organization expand its arts and culture coverage and reach more 35 to 54 year-olds. VPM has not yet decided if it will resume print publication.
Style was created in November 1982 by Lorna Wyckoff as a monthly publication. It became a free weekly newspaper in 1984 when it was sold to Landmark Communications. It grew readership with its arts coverage, restaurant reviews, personal ads and events calendar.
This publication is a member of the Association of Alternative Newsmedia (AAN). AAN is a group of newspapers and magazines providing journalism that offers an alternative to the mainstream media in the area.

"A $10.35 million libel lawsuit against Style Weekly set to go to trial yesterday has been resolved in favor of Del. Joseph D. Morrissey, D-Henrico, his lawyer said.
Mark S. Paullin, the lawyer, said a settlement was reached with Style Weekly lawyers late Friday and that a proposed order dismissing the suit will be filed in coming days in Richmond...Also in Virginia...
