It also offers news and information intended to foster unity with the Church throughout the world, and instructs the faithful about authentic Catholic teaching and practice.

The Southern Cross began publishing in 1912 as an independent Catholic publication. In 1937, San Diego's first bishop declared the Southern Cross the official newspaper of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego, California.
