Google News is a USA website covering National News.
Launched in 2002, Google News gathers stories from more than 50,000 news sources worldwide and uses an algorithm (a set of instructions written by a human for a computer) to arrange them in an effort to show the 'most relevant' news first. Google News takes the first 200 characters of a story and presents them with a link to the full story. The service is available in 35 languages.
Google News says its results are compiled, updating every 15 seconds, by machine without human intervention. But Google's description of the process is dishonest and deceptive, because "the machine" is using instructions created by people -- with their attendant beliefs and biases. For more on this subject see the Recode article Algorithms and bias, explained by Rebecca Heilweil.
Google implies that its news is objective and unbiased because it is chosen by machines, which is simply not true. The news Google presents is chosen by Google programmers and engineers based on their very human (and frequently young, white, male and highly educated) ideas of what is popular, important and worthy of notice.
