Outside Magazine

Outside is a USA magazine covering Outdoor Sports.

Outside magazine is published for active lifestyle enthusiasts and experts, ranging from weekend warriors to professional athletes with coverage of adventure travel, destinations, sports and tips on the latest gear.

The magazine's launch was funded by Jann Wenner of Rolling Stone magazine and the first issue, an insert in Rolling Stone, was dated September 1977. Outside gained major attention in the 1990s, winning five consecutive National Magazine Awards for general excellence. This was thanks to the work of writers like Sebastian Junger, who wrote a 1994 article that became the book and movie The Perfect Storm, and Jon Krakauer, who wrote an essay about Christopher McCandless that later became the book Into The Wild.

The magazine is owned by Outside Interactive, a business formed in February 2021 when Pocket Outdoor Media acquired Mariah Media Inc., a company started in 1976 by Larry Burke, which bought Outside magazine from Jann Wenner in 1978. Mariah Media was the parent of Outside Integrated Media which operated Outside magazine and Outside TV, now parts of Outside Interactive.

This magazine is owned by Outside Interactive, Inc.
