Ebony Magazine

Ebony is a USA magazine covering Ethnic Lifestyle.

Launched in 1945 by Chicago businessman John Johnson, Ebony is a lifestyle magazine for African Americans. It features celebrity profiles, social commentary and analysis of politics, culture and the arts, providing a unique forum exploring the relationship of African Americans and the world. Ebony stopped publishing in print after the Spring 2019 issue.

Ebony achieved its greatest popularity during the 1980s with a circulation on the order of 2 million. In June 2016, the Johnson family sold both Ebony and Jet magazine to Clear View Group, a private equity firm based in Texas owned by African Americans. The buyers formed a new company called Ebony Media Holdings LLC to operate the magazines.

In July 2020, Ebony Media filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation after defaulting on over $11 million in loans. The bankruptcy was changed to a Chapter 11 reorganization in September, leading to the auction of Ebony Media assets. On December 18, 2020, Bridgeman Sports & Media LLC paid $14 million for Ebony Media Holdings, including Ebony and Jet magazines. Ebony Magazine was relaunched as a digital service on March 1, 2021. It is operated by 1145 Holdings LLC, a unit of Bridgeman Sports & Media.

This magazine is owned by 1145 Holdings LLC.
