Advance Publications, Inc.

Advance Publications is a major force in print media in the United States. Through its Conde Nast division, the company owns many leading magazines including The New Yorker and Vanity Fair. The Advance Local Media LLC division includes major American newspapers such as the Cleveland Plain Dealer and Birmingham News. Advance also owns the business newspaper group American City Business Journals.

The company is privately owned by the Newhouse family. It is managed by Donald Newhouse, who ran the business with his brother Samuel "Si" Newhouse Jr. until Si Newhouse's death at the age of 89 on October 1, 2017. Si Newhouse had led the company's magazine division, Conde Nast.

Advance Publications was founded by Samuel Irving Newhouse, Sr. (May 24, 1895 - August 29, 1979), the father of Si and Donald. The elder Newhouse was born on the Lower East Side of New York City to Jewish immigrant parents. Hard working and resourceful, he acquired his first newspaper in 1922 with the purchase of the Staten Island Advance. In the following years he built a newspaper empire which included the Newark Ledger, the Syracuse Post-Standard, and the Harrisburg Patriot-News.

Samuel Newhouse Sr. formed Advance Publications Inc. in 1949, and continued buying newspapers including the Portland Oregonian (1950) and The Birmingham News (1955).

In 1959, Newhouse entered the magazine business with the purchase of Conde Nast Publications for $5 million. Apparently the Conde Nast purchase was his wife's idea, and Newhouse said "She asked for a fashion magazine and I went out and got her Vogue."

MY WIFE AND I ARE CARRIERS OF THE SPRINGFIELD REPUBLICAN FOR 20 YRS . AS OF LATE WE ARE NOT BEING PAID FOR DELIVERY BECAUSE OF POOR BUSINESS PRACTICES DUE TO MANY ERRORS BY YOUR COMPANY IN SPRINGFIELD MASS.THE MANAGEMENT CLAIMS THAT YOU FOLKS HAVE STATED THAT ITS ALL ABOUT YOUR 3 MILLION DOLLER PROFITS . THE REPUBLICAN HAS LOST CUSTOMER PAYMENTS AND CLAIM TO HAVE FORGOTTEN TO BILL CUSTOMERS BUT WE AS DISTRIBUTERS MUST CONTINUE TO DELIVER WITHOUT BEING PAID. NO WONDER YOUR PROFITS ARE SO GREAT. PEOPLE WORK HARD FOR THEIR INCOME AND IT IS DISHONEST TO MISHANDLE THEIR PAYMENTS. IN AN ECONOMY WITH GAS AT $4.00 PER GALLON IT IS ALSO DISHONEST TO NOT PAY YOUR NEWSPAPER DISTRIBUTORS . HUNDREDS OF PAYING SUBSCRIBERS HAVE QUIT DUE TO THE FRUSTRATION OF LOST FUNDS AND POOR QUALITY PAPERS RIPPED, TORN, AND INCOMPLETE ,ALSO DUE TO POOR MANAGEMENT AND A LACK REASONABLE CARE BY THE REPUBLICAN.WITH ALL THESE PROBLEMS WE DISTRIBUTORS ARE STILL EXPECTED TO DELIVER PAPERS WITH NO PAY. PLEASE AS MILLIONAIRE OWNERS STOP THESE INCOMPETANT MANAGEMENT FROM DOING FURTHER DAMAGE TO YOUR CUSTOMERS AND EMPLOYEES. WITH PROPER MANAGEMENT YOUR PROFITS COULD BE EVEN BETTER . CUSTOMERS HAVE LOST TRUST IN THE RAPUBLICAN1000S OF THEM . I WOULD LOVE TO CONTINUE SERVING MY CUSTOMERS IN THE FUTURE , BUT WITH SHODDY MANAGEMENT, BOTH CUSTOMER AND DISTRIBUTORS ARE BEING TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF. AS AN EMPLOYEE OF AN AREA BUSINESS OTHER THAN DISTRIBUTION I MEET ALL KINDS OF FOLKS WHO WISH SOMEONE WOULD STEP UP AND FIX THESE PROBLEMS TO RETURN TO A NICE HONEST NEWSPAPER BUT THE MANAGEMENT IN SPRINGFIELD HAS LITTLE CONCERN FOR ANYONE OR ANYTHING EXCEPT YOUR PROFITS. WITHOUT SOME INTERVENTION ON YOUR PART THE FUTURE OF THIS PAPER IS NO DOUBT IN JEOPARDY P.S MY FAMILY HAS WORKED TO DELIVER YOUR PAPER FOR 20YRS AND HAS SEEN A CONSTANT DECLINE IN UNSATISFIED CUSTOMERS.AND ARE QUITE DISSAPPOINTED IN THE DISHONESTY THAT YOU HAVE SHOWN . IT IS INEVITEABLE THAT UNDER THIS MANAGEMENT. THE FUTURE OF THE REPUBLICAN AND ITS EMPLOYEES AND SUBSCRIBERS WILL BE SHORT LIVED .WE HAVE DEALT WITH CRYING SUBSCRIBERS WHO WANT TO KNOW WHERE THIER MONEY HAS GONE.PROFITS ARE GREAT BUT WHY STEAL IT. THANK YOU

The article that your Washington Business Journal did on me & my Copyright Infringement case against BET, Paramount Pictures, & Viacom was subjectively biased in favor of the crooked Defendants. Your article was so biased that it contained slanders statements that damaged my professional, personal, and legal credibility. My advise to u & your co. is it would be very wise to straighten this matter out very soon, or a specific diencephalic decision will need to be made cognizant to this subject matter.

this this the worst company i have ever delt with. i was supposed to recieve my first magazine a couple of weeks ago and i still have not. all they tell me is that it must be lost and im cant get another one for like three weeks.by then the masters will be over so it wont help me then. i use ups everyday, all they have to do is send it that way and i could get it in a few days. these people dont give a dam about their customers and i hope they go out of business,i am going to tell everyone i know and get them to tell everyone they know never to get golf digest again. i hope this helps someone to not have to go through the same thing i have .

I have to agree with you mizliz. I sold media for more than twenty years and I must tell you that I am ashamed of my profession for what it has done to our county. And I am sick of being spoon fed and brainwashed bits of info in sound bites of what they want us to believe.

I subscribe to the Oregonian. I wish I didn't, I wish there was a comparable newspaper in my area, but The Columbian is pretty poor. I have watched with dismay while this paper becomes the mouthpiece for conservative big business. The latest insult to us all is the wrap-around front page ads against initiatives 66 and 67 which would increase the corporate minimum tax from a laughable $10 to $150.

And aren't the rich folk just furious! Who cares about schools, firefighters, law enforcement etc?
The Oregonian editorial page has become a propaganda outlet. Their latest "triumph" is the Supreme Court decision just yesterday to allow corporations to outright buy their political candidates with no limits. We're in trouble, people, and it's due to people like the Newhouses.

In the Primary 2008 Election, the Oregonian newspaper and TV stations in Portland, Oregon, refused to invite me on debate / forum of candidates for US Senate. It is a violation of the Constitution of the USA: USC T 47, section 315. It is a crime.
What a shame on the media. All money, money and money.
The money will NOT shield this nation from weapons of mass destruction. And dead people do not need money.
