WCNC TV 36 is a TV station in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA airing NBC network programs, local news and weather.

WCNC TV 36 is the NBC network affiliate station in Charlotte, North Carolina. It has had many owners and used a variety of call letters since it began broadcasting on July 9, 1967 as WCTU TV. The station was the original home of Jim Bakker's television ministry after he broke off from Pat Robertson's Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN).
In 1970, the station was sold to Ted Turner who renamed it WRET (after his initials, Robert Edward Turner). In 1980, Turner sold WRET to Westinghouse Electric Corporation (Group W), using the proceeds to start CNN. Group W changed the call letters to WPCQ TV. The station was later sold to Renaissance Broadcasting (in 1984) and to The Providence Journal Company (in 1988). Journal Broadcasting renamed the station WCNC TV, standing for "Charlotte North Carolina," on September 3, 1989. Journal Broadcasting merged with Belo Corporation in 1997 and Belo was acquired by Gannett Company in 2013.

WCNC TV 36 Names Matt King News Director
-- In October 2014, Matt King was named news director of WCNC TV 36. He had been assistant news director at WXIA in Atlanta. King replaced Corrie Harding who left for NBC News in February 2014 and Ron Bilek who was the interim news director since April 2014.
