Al Gore Ready to Unplug from Current TV

-- November 8, 2012: Company chairman and former U.S. Vice President Al Gore wants out, as many news services have been reporting for weeks now.

Current TV CEO Joel Hyatt, who along with Gore is one of the owners of the channel, told the New York Post that "Current has been approached many times by media companies interested in acquiring our company. This year alone, we have had three inquiries. As a consequence, we thought it might be useful to engage expertise to help us evaluate our strategic options."

Of course, what the good chief executive means is "time to bail."

The liberal cable TV news service has been unable to find its footing since it was launched in 2005. It tried positioning itself as a "peer to peer" news network, produced in collaboration with its audience, which didn't work. It tried running left-tilting news and opinion as does MSNBC, and that didn't work.

And, in February 2011 it took a reckless gamble on the hopeless Keith Olbermann, who needed just a few months to implode, get fired, and sue the channel. For a humorous encore, Current TV hired Eliot Spitzer to replace him.

Still, potential buyers will probably not be concerned about the channel's history, because the real asset to bid on is Current TV's access to 60 million cable TV homes.
